Delaware Children's Museum Meet-Up

Join us for "$5 Fridays" at the Delaware Children's Museum. Their website reads:

End of Summer Bash
Summer is almost over and the DCM is ready to end the season right. Come help us set off a total of 300 soda geysers throughout the course of the night, during this three-hour indoor/outdoor bash for the whole family! Then come inside for a dance party, a special performance, and playtime in the Museum's exhibitions. Ever seen a hot dog explode? Witness Delmarva Power Company using electricity to make hot dogs burst. Plus, enjoy the many awesome activities provided by other local organizations such as Brandywine Zoo, Stratosphere Trampoline Park, food vendors like the Wandering Chef, and much more!

The DSA will pay for one child with Down syndrome as well as one adult for each family. We will have a board member meet you at the event to pay for those two people covered.

Many Thanks to everyone who responded to our survey this summer. You gave us many suggestions and ideas for making our meetings more meaningful and useful for you. Our first meeting is based on all your feedback – new location, new day of the week, and a topic which applies to all our children and young adults.

Join us as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) covers some of the following topics:

- Making friendships
- Behavior challenges in persons with access and functional needs
- Behavior challenges in persons with speech impediments
- Independent living / acquiring life skills

DSA Day at Bohemia Bay Yacht Harbor

Come enjoy a day of summer fun by the pool, beach, and boat rides at the beautiful Bohemia Bay Yacht Harbour! A day designed just for the Down Syndrome Association of Delaware. Hotdogs, Hamburgers, Cheeseburgers and drinks will be provided at no cost to families. Please bring a side dish or a dessert to share.

Come Hungry -- A cookout will be held later in the day.

RSVP is required by August 31st, please help us plan for the day of fun!

If you have a Coast Guard approved life vest for your child please bring one- the Yacht Harbor will lend out some but there is a limited supply.

Speech and Feeding Seminar with Lori Overland, MS,CCC-SLP

This one day seminar focuses on the development of oral-motor and feeding skills in the Down syndrome population from birth to adulthood. Factors which potentially impact feeding will be presented. This will be followed by an overview of therapeutic intervention strategies to prevent long term feeding problems. Assessment of sensory and motor skills will be discussed prior to the lunch break. The afternoon program provides a framework for developing sensory diets and facilitating improved oral-motor and feeding skills through therapeutic feeding techniques.

The seminar will be held on Friday, September 12th at the Easter Seals of New Castle DE.

Registration pricing is as follows. Lunch is included in registration price.

Lori Overland Family Session- Speech & Feeding Therapy

Join us on Saturday morning at Easter Seals for a special family session where Lori will focus on speech. Learn about the theoretical foundation for doing oral placement therapy, hear about the greatest challenges in children with DS with regard to speech production and learn a few techniques for teaching sound placement.

To help facilitate the discussion, we are asking parents to share videos (5 minutes) of their children talking. Lori will review and choose a few to talk about assessment and treatment. Send your video to info@dsadelaware.org
